With that said…..today’s Inspiration Monday is all about the beautiful Fatoumata Diawara.
Fatoumata Diawara is a musician and actress from Mali, West Africa and I learned of her music one evening while listening to Pandora.com
The moment I heard her music I felt connected to Africa. I felt connected to the pure, unpretentious, natural beauty of Africa. I can hear it in her voice; I can hear it through the sound of her guitar; and I can see it through her performances and videos on Youtube. Her style and grace are to be admired and I absolutely love her artistry!
I listen to her music almost daily. Even though her songs are in a different language, I can feel the emotion in each word she sings. Her music is universal and I can imagine that she sings about love, family, and Africa.
When I traveled to Madrid, Spain last year for an international law study abroad program, I listened to Fatoumata’s music every day. As I walked the streets of Madrid in 100 degree weather, I filled my ears with her West African rhythm. When I walked by people on the streets, I only wished they could hear the beautiful music I was listening to. If there had been no one watching, I would have danced in the streets.
World music makes me feel connected to world cultures on a very deep level.
I always feel happy when I listen to Fatoumata and I hope she inspires you today.
My favorite song is Makoun Oumou – I listened to this song everyday while in Spain. Take a listen and tell me what you think.
