One can only imagine my excitement when I heard that Idris Elba had created a music album in dedication to the lives of Madiba and to his own father. Idris was so inspired by portraying Madiba on film that he wrote and produced an entire music album to express his heart through song.
I have listened to the album and so many words dance in my spirit when I hear the beautiful songs that make up mi Mandela. Rhythym, Soul, Freedom, Nurture, Peace, Release, Honor, Celebration, Remembrance, Adoration, Love, and Connection are just a few words that come to my mind as I listen to this beautiful album.
I can hear the heartbeat of South Africa in this music.
I can feel the humility and gratitude in this music.
I am inspired by this music.
I think that Idris Elba really stepped out on faith and followed his heart and intuition to create this album. I am not aware of other actors that have portrayed a character or person on screen and then moved on to create an album in dedication to that character or person. I am fascinated by this project and I am proud to support it.
Idris has explained in an interview that he wrote and produced the songs for the album, then gathered some of the most distinguished and gifted South African and British musicians to create the sound and to sing the melodies of the album. His process reminds me of another process that is near and dear to me: community organizing.
When I think of the process in the creation of this album, I think of the idea that a cross cultural community was brought together to fulfill a powerful purpose: to honor and remember the lives of two great men. As a community organizer, I too have participated in helping to bring communities together for a powerful purpose: to advocate for change in order to help create a better quality of life for the people of those communities.
For the past several days, mi Mandela has served as my theme music. I feel inspired with new ideas and I can easily travel back to South Africa in my daydreams while listening to my favorite songs on the album. I would say my favorite songs are “Tree,” “You Give Me Love,” and “Thank You For Freedom.”
I highly recommend this album for anyone with a creative spirit and for those that are seeking inspiration in their day.
Idris Elba and mi Mandela are my inspiration Monday because his musical project inspires me to have the courage to express myself in various ways. I genuinely feel inspired to nurture the many layers that make up ME. This music project also inspires me to remember that on this journey of fulfilling my purpose, I am never alone. Just as mi Mandela brought together musicians from different continents to fulfill its purpose, there are many in my life that come together to help me fulfill my purpose. For this inspiration, I give thanks.
mi Mandela - its just beautiful
